Cosby is Almost Right…

As a child, I remember sitting around the TV with my family waiting to watch one of my favorite shows, The Cosby Show. Not only was it funny, but it was probably one of the last shows on television to represent how an individual – and family – acted when it practiced good values, morals and principles. Fast-forward a decade or so later and I was finally introduced to Bill Cosby’s stand-up act for the first time by a friend of mine. I laughed so hard at his dentist bit that I literally had to leave the room and go outside just to get some air. It was one of the funniest things I had ever heard and I eventually had the privilege of seeing him perform his act live where he ended his routine with that same bit, capping off a great evening of comedy.
I have always had the utmost respect for Bill Cosby and still do for his stance on morals and personal responsibility. He is unfortunately criticized for standing up for these values even within his own black community. I applaud him for taking such stands on tough issues – well they’re tough issues according to society, but common sense for many of us. However, there seems to be one issue that we don’t seem to completely agree on: guns.
In case you’ve been living under a rock, the Trayvon Martin story has been a big part of the news in recent weeks and Cosby was asked to comment on it. On a side note, why is this just Trayvon Martin’s story? Why not also Zimmerman? I have thoughts on that but it’s beside the point. At any rate, in a CNN interview, Cosby gets half of the equation right when he acknowledges that race has nothing to do with what happened, but loses me when he says, “I believe that when you tell me that you’re going to protect the neighborhood that I live in, I don’t want you to have a gun.” For an individual whom I admire and respect, I’m disappointed that he couldn’t nail this one down and put it away like he does in capping off his stand-up routine.
Friends, Cosby is right that race is not an issue, but how many times are we going to blame an inanimate object for the killing of a human being? Cosby even admits to once owning a gun to protect his family and understood that there is a level of responsibility that comes with owning a firearm, but he doesn’t seem to understand – like many other anti-gun activists – that the gun, is no more responsible for the killing of a human being than the car that was driven by a drunk driver is responsible in the death of a family of four. Should we outlaw cars because they were involved in this and many other drunken murderous acts like it?
The focus of the Trayvon Martin shooting should be on the events and individuals of that night and processed through the justice system where the facts can be presented and the accused tried by a panel of his peers. We are not a vigilante justice society, nor should we ever be one and those who believe in such should be condemned for their statements. I will stand up for my right to carry a firearm; I will defend myself if necessary; I will stand up against racism; I will fight for proper justice; and I will draw the line for what is right and what is wrong.
Are you with me or not?

. . . and who’s the racist?

Lately, there has obviously been tons of talk about the Trayvon Martin situation. It is unfortunate to say the least. However, what do we know about what actually happened that night? I haven’t read every piece of news out there, but it seems like we don’t actually no what went down at the scene. Was this kid killed? Yep, and that’s sad. What led to that unfortunate event, though? Apparently, the guy who did it claimed self defense and, I’ve heard of at least one witness story that supported that. I don’t know how legit that was, but who cares. The point I’m driving at is no one really knows because we weren’t there. It is certainly possible the man acted in a manner of self defense and it’s equally possible that he didn’t. We won’t actually know until all of the ACTUAL FACTS are allowed to come out. We are already at the point that I fear the facts won’t really come out. If they do, to any extent, I fear that no one will hear them or pay them any attention.
It is no secret that, since Obama has taken office, this country is as divided as it’s ever been. It is also no secret, if we’re all honest and forget about “political correctness”, it is mostly black groups that fuel racism and keep it alive, declaring it where it is not and complaining about anything and everything. I have no problem with people based on their pigmentation, but please prove me wrong on this. We are at a scary place with this Trayvon situation. No longer are people worried about the facts of the case, or about the kid’s family. It has blown up into a racially charged circus that could be used to ignite all kinds of trouble. Notice the absence of Obama and any intelligible and responsible words. I feel like he’s letting things go as they may in order to allow the chaos and, what may turn into violence. I don’t know, though, I am only speculating and will stop now before going too far. What I do know is the guy who can help bring his perspective is in hiding because one of the more vocal and obnoxious groups speaking out on the case is the New Blank Panther party. This group is dangerous. They don’t give a crap about Trayvon or his family. They are, however, using this as an opportunity to spew their crap as loud as possible to further the strands of division. Don’t believe me? Allow me to introduce you. Here’s a recent clip of the New Black Panthers on Anderson Cooper:
Keep in mind what he said and how he said it. And it’s the white people who are racist? No. These people are fueling it more than anybody. Here’s another great clip from another member. This is not the same guy, obviously, but still a leader in the New Black Panthers and wants to kill “crackers” and their babies:
My point is not to completely attack these thugs, but to call attention to it. As I’ve said on other occasions, stay alert and aware, everybody. There are evil forces at work and they will do all they can to divert from the truth. Look for truth, stay grounded on the facts. If you don’t know the facts, don’t jump to conclusions. Wait and hold hate-filled people like these at bay.
